Weligama

Weligama Travel Guide 2026

A charming coastal town famous for its stilt fishermen, beginner-friendly surf waves, and the nearby Taprobane Island. One of Sri Lanka's best spots to learn surfing.

🗓️ Best time to visit: November to April

Weligama — meaning "sandy village" in Sinhala — is a laid-back coastal town on Sri Lanka's southern coast, 30 km east of Galle and 14 km west of Mirissa. It has earned a reputation as the best place to learn surfing in Sri Lanka: the bay is wide, the waves are consistent, and the bottom is sandy rather than reef. Surfing schools charge LKR 2,500–4,000 for a two-hour beginner lesson including board and instructor.

The main beach stretches 2 km in a gentle arc. The western end near Weligama town is where the fishing boats launch and the famous Sri Lankan stilt fishermen perch on their poles at dawn and dusk — a centuries-old technique now kept alive partly for tourism but still genuinely practised by older fishermen. The central and eastern sections are where the surf schools operate and where most accommodation is clustered.

The best things to do in Weligama beyond surfing include whale watching from Mirissa (14 km east) — blue whales and sperm whales are sighted November to April, and most boat trips depart at 6 AM returning by noon. Polhena Beach (3 km west) has a natural reef lagoon that is excellent for snorkelling with sea turtles in calm, shallow water. Galle Fort (30 km west, 35 minutes) is the mandatory cultural day trip: UNESCO ramparts, Dutch colonial architecture, and excellent cafés inside 400-year-old buildings.

Inland from Weligama, the road climbs through rubber and tea estates to Devinuwara (Dondra Head) — the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, marked by a 19th-century lighthouse. The 176 steps to the top offer the widest seascape view on the island. Most drivers quote LKR 1,500–2,000 return for a half-day trip covering Dondra and Dickwella.

The surf season in Weligama runs October to April, peaking in November–March when waves are 0.5–2 m and offshore winds clean the faces. The off-season (May–September) brings larger, messier swell and fewer tourists — accommodation prices drop 20–40% and the town reverts to a working fishing village atmosphere. Weligama is on the A2 coastal highway: intercity buses from Colombo take 2.5–3 hours (LKR 250) and stop on the main street.
