Unawatuna

Unawatuna Travel Guide 2026

A crescent-shaped beach bay near Galle, consistently rated among the best beaches in the world. Crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and a laid-back traveller vibe.

🗓️ Best time to visit: November to April

Unawatuna is a crescent-shaped bay village 5 km south of Galle Fort, consistently ranked among the best beaches in Sri Lanka and a favourite on the southern coast tourist trail. The natural bay orientation blocks the open-ocean swell and creates calm, clear swimming water from November through April — one of the safest and most beautiful beaches in the country.

The beach itself stretches 1.2 km along a protected cove lined with palm trees, beach bars, and seafood restaurants. The reef at the eastern end of the bay is the top snorkelling spot in Unawatuna — sea turtles, moray eels, and reef fish are regular sightings from LKR 500–800 per mask-and-fins rental. Dive centres on the main beach offer PADI courses and guided wreck dives on the WWII-era SS Rangoon (20 minutes offshore), one of the best wreck dives in Sri Lanka.

The best things to do in Unawatuna beyond the beach include the Japanese Peace Pagoda — a 30-minute uphill walk through Rumassala Hill forest that rewards with 180° panoramic views over the bay and the Indian Ocean. Jungle Beach, a 15-minute walk east of the main beach, is smaller, quieter, and backed by dense jungle — arrive before 10 AM to have it nearly to yourself. The Wijaya Beach Restaurant and Hot Rock Restaurant are the long-standing dining institutions, while newer beach bars host live music on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Galle Fort (5 km, 10 minutes by tuk-tuk at LKR 300–500) is the obvious half-day trip — UNESCO-listed ramparts, boutique galleries, and the best cafés in southern Sri Lanka. Mirissa (25 km east) is the base for blue whale watching from November to April; most operators depart at 6 AM and return by noon. Unawatuna sits on the main southern coastal road (A2), making it easy to reach by bus from Colombo (3 hours, LKR 200) or by train to Galle station followed by a tuk-tuk.

Accommodation in Unawatuna ranges from guesthouses at LKR 3,000–6,000 per night to boutique hotels at USD 80–150. The peak season is December to February when rates rise 30–50%. Book at least 4 weeks ahead for December arrivals.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about Unawatuna

Yes, the bay shape protects Unawatuna from strong currents, making it one of the safest swimming beaches in Sri Lanka. The water is calm and clear November to April.

Unawatuna is just 5km (10 minutes by tuk-tuk, LKR 300-500) from Galle Fort. Many travelers split their time between the cultural attractions of Galle and the beaches of Unawatuna.

The reef at the east end of Unawatuna beach has sea turtles, moray eels, and colorful fish. Jungle Beach (10 min walk) is quieter with good coral. For serious diving, dive centers offer PADI courses and wreck dives on the Rangoon wreck nearby.

Unawatuna has excellent dining. The Wijaya Beach Restaurant and Lucky Tuna are popular for seafood. Hot Rock Restaurant has a great mix of Sri Lankan and Western food with ocean views. Many beach cafes serve fresh fish, hoppers, and smoothie bowls.

Both are great but for different reasons. Unawatuna has a more protected bay for swimming, a beautiful nearby fort (Galle), and calmer waters. Mirissa has better whale watching, livelier nightlife, and a more party atmosphere. Unawatuna tends to be slightly less crowded.
