Jaffna cuisine is distinct from the rest of Sri Lanka. Must-tries include Jaffna crab curry, dosai, vadai, string hoppers with curry, palmyra toddy, and Rio Ice Cream. The seafood is exceptional.
The Northern Railway runs direct trains from Colombo Fort to Jaffna (7-8 hours, from LKR 900). Intercity buses take 6-7 hours. Budget airlines also connect Colombo to Jaffna in under an hour.
Nainativu Island has the sacred Nagadeepa Vihara (Buddhist) and Nainativu Nagapooshani Amman Temple (Hindu) — accessible by ferry from Kurikattuwan. Kayts and Karaitivu islands offer quiet beaches and historic causeways.
January to September is the best time. October and November see heavy northeast monsoon rains. April to June can be very hot (35°C+). The Nallur Festival in July-August is an unmissable cultural event.
