Why visit Weligama

Weligama — meaning “sandy village” in Sinhalese — sits at the centre of a wide, sheltered bay on Sri Lanka's south coast, 153km from Colombo. Its reputation as a learner surf destination draws beginners from around the world, with surf schools lining the beachfront and patient instructors getting first-timers up and riding within a few hours. The bay is wide enough to handle the crowds and the gradual shelf keeps waves small and forgiving.

Beyond surfing, Weligama is well placed for day trips: Mirissa's whale watching is 5km east, Galle Fort is 26km west, and Unawatuna beach is between the two. The town has a growing food and coffee scene and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to extend a planned two-day stop into a week-long stay.

Surfing in Weligama

The main surf break at Weligama Bay is a beach break with soft, slow waves — perfect for beginners. Lessons typically run 1.5 hours and cost LKR 2,500–5,000 including board and rash vest. Most surf schools operate from 7am onwards to avoid the midday heat.

Intermediate and advanced surfers can explore the reef break at the eastern end of the bay (Weligama Point) or venture to nearby Midigama (10 min east) which has a challenging left-hand reef popular with experienced surfers. Mirissa Point (right-hander) is another 5km east.

Things to do

Whale watching at Mirissa — Blue and sperm whales are seen regularly Nov–Apr. Boats depart at 6am; book the evening before. Cost: approx LKR 5,000–7,000/person.

Taprobane Island — A private island in Weligama Bay that can be walked to at low tide. One of Sri Lanka's most photographed spots.

Day trip to Galle — The UNESCO-listed Galle Fort is 30 minutes by tuk-tuk or bus. Spend the afternoon in the old town, galleries and coffee shops inside the fort walls.

Where to stay

Weligama has good budget options — dorm beds from $5/night and private rooms from $15. Most surf hostels are along the beach road between the bus stand and the bay. Look for places that include breakfast and offer board hire on-site to keep costs down.
