Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay Travel Guide 2026

Sri Lanka's premier surfing destination on the east coast. World-class waves, laid-back vibes, and stunning beaches attract surfers and backpackers worldwide.

🗓️ Best time to visit: April to October (surf season)

Arugam Bay is a small fishing village on Sri Lanka’s east coast that transforms into the island’s surf capital every April when the Indian Ocean swells arrive. The Main Point break — a long, consistent right-hander — is ranked among the top 10 surf spots in Asia, drawing intermediate and advanced surfers from April to October each year.

Beyond surfing, Arugam Bay has a distinctly laid-back character: tuk-tuk rides down the single main road, seafood dinners at open-air lagoon restaurants, and bonfire beach parties after dark. Pottuvil Lagoon (3 km north) rewards morning boat safaris with crocodiles, leopards at the water’s edge, and dense bird colonies. Kumana National Park (30 km south) is a less-crowded alternative to Yala with elephant herds and flamingo flocks. A Bay, Whisky Point, and Pottuvil Point are mellower breaks ideal for beginner surfers (board hire from LKR 1,500/day).
